Body Shaming Spoken Word Poem

I recently had to write a spoken word poem for my creative writing class about a topic that I am really passionate about and I chose to write about body shaming. My class enjoyed it and gave such good feedback that I decided to share it with my followers, whom I think will relate to it even more and appreciate it. So, here goes nothing…

Body Shaming

I hear the cat callers on the street comment on that fat ass or flat ass like they own it.

Like they have been with me these 19 years of life. Living through the ups and down of confidence battles.

Like they used to cry in the bathroom at school after seeing the boys only give attention to the skinny, pretty girls.

Do they know what that person has done on the daily for years? Whether counting every little calorie or running two miles every morning to try to get that quote on quote skinny. They simply DO NOT know.

Shamers can judge all they want but they never know a person’s story. So why they think it is okay to judge just baffles my mind.

I try to give them the benefit of the doubt though because I don’t know their story either. How their parents raised them, if they had a lacking support system, or maybe they didn’t have parents at all. I do not know. Who am I to judge?

I read the hate comments on my favorite body positivity activist’s Instagram. “You’re too fat for your husband to love you. He’s only with you for your money.”

Negativity and jealousy how they are a funny thing.

I blame Disney princesses. They are portrayed as perfect. Perfect hair, perfect makeup, perfect clothing, and the most unrealistic of all-perfect bodies.

News flash people nothing is perfect. No matter how hard you try, absolutely nothing is a perfect as it is portrayed.

I wonder how people can be filled with so much hate? I just want positivity. Like is that too much to ask for?

Karma is a bitch they say.  One day it will come back to the haters. But for now, honey, just keep your hater blockers on. The future is looking grand.

My body is my body, my home and I will not tolerate bricks being thrown at it. I am a body positivity activist and I am changing the world.

  2. Thanks for sharing! It’s beautiful! I’m sure lots of women all ages experience this since early age and it seems like we should keep our mouths shut otherwise we get other “brands” on top of that. Keep it going, let the haters hate 😉
