5 Unique Things to Do in Metro-Detroit this Summer

I have a love/hate relationship with Michigan summers but there are some unique activities to do to make the most of the humid (and unpredictable) weather. With this being one of my last official summers in Michigan, I’m determined to make it a fun-filled one. If you have any suggestions for other things to do this summer, please leave a comment below. I am super open to suggestions and spreading the fun activities around for everyone.

LOCAL BERRY PICKING |

There are many places to berry pick in the Detroit area. This is a fun family activity or to do with friends. Pick a nice sunny day and venture out to a local spot. Whittaker’s Berry Farm in Ida, MI offers strawberry picking for a minimum purchase of $10, but you can pick as many strawberries as you desire. They do mention on their site that their season starts approximately the first week of June with it only lasting approximately 18 days so be sure to time your visit correctly.

EASTERN MARKET FLOWER SEASON TUESDAY MARKETS |

Who doesn’t love admiring and buying flowers for the summertime? Every Tuesday in the month of May, Eastern Market in Detroit is hosting Tuesday Markets. They will have flower selections from Eastern Market growers, smaller crowds, and easier parking. It runs from 9 AM to 3 PM. Buy some flowers and then explore the area for a bite to eat.

Even if you’re not able to visit Eastern Market for their Flower Markets, every Saturday they host Farmers Markets which are a fun thing to do on the weekend as well.

NIGHT LIGHTS AT AUTO CITY SPEEDWAY |

On Saturday, June 11th from 5 PM to 11 PM, the Night Lights Sky Lantern Festival is coming to Michigan. Taking place at the Auto City Speedway in Genesse County, MI, it’s about 1.5 hours north of Downtown Detroit. Thousands of lanterns are released in the night sky for a magical site. The tickets are retailing for $31 right now. There is also food available for purchase, s’mores stations, and live music.

DETROIT TIGERS GAME |

I feel like going to a baseball game is a given for the summertime. The Detroit Tigers have a multitude of home games this summer. Take your pick at a date, grab some friends, and enjoy!

BLAKE’S LAVENDER MARKET |

Blake’s in Armada is hosting a lavender market from July 15th to July 17th from 10 AM to 5 PM. There are over 150 artisans selling handmade products, free classes, DIY stations, U-cut lavender, and lavender infused snacks and drinks for you to try. Tickets are only $10 right now, but look to be going up after June 1st, so snag one now.
